Resolution

Upon inspection, the HVAC team discovered that the pump motor wire insulation was damaged, causing a ground fault that tripped the pump’s overcurrent protection.

Fortunately, the plant had a redundant pump, which automatically engaged when Pump #2 failed.

The motor was inspected and found to be in good condition. The damaged cables were replaced, and the pump was restored to operation within minutes.

Takeaways

The HVAC fault detection system provided critical real-time information, enabling fast identification and resolution of the issue, preventing future system failure and business interruption

What If the Issue Had Gone Undetected?

If this fault had not been addressed, the plant would have continued operating on Pump #1 indefinitely until that pump eventually failed as well, leading to a complete shutdown of the chiller plant. This would have affected cooling for the entire building, causing occupant discomfort and disrupting business operations.
